Tell us about New and Exciting Theatre York…
How to turn a stage show into an event?
Steve Tearle did that yet again with “Fiddler On The Roof” at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre this April.
With a cast of 60 this community theatre group, New&Exciting Theatre York, comprising whole families mums, dads, brothers, sisters and of course grandparents!
Their sole focus was to bring to stage a story that was not just timeless but relevant to our times and unfortunately happening as these awards are presented.
How could the heartbreaking story of Tevya, his family, friends and indeed his village of Anatevka to life without ensuring that enduring compassion was felt by the entire audience and cast too!
This Fiddler On The Roof had indeed a Fiddler On The Roof watching all that was happening was it Tevyas conscious this we find in the story.
During the 9 weeks of rehearsals the cast were given weekly facts about the story and the history of it.
The story as it unfolded at times was uncomfortable and sad at how man can treat man.
This was balanced with humour and pathos that captured the audience and they joined that journey with the folk of Anatevka to the very end.
Then every audience member we’re on their feet clapping and cheering with hankies in hand tears in their eyes and as they as they told us had witnessed theatre at its best an event with an amazing set, costumes and music that wrapped you up and took you to the wilds of Anatevka, the violins brought tears that rolled down the audience’s cheeks!
They felt the desperate displacement of families communities torn apart!
The cast drew from some bitter sweet facts that they turned into their performances to give justice to those communities that still face this to this day.
Tevya and Anatevka may be based loosely on fictional stories from the beginning of the last century.
However the cast can tell you there is now a real place called Anatevka and it’s in Ukraine and was set up in 2014 after the first Russian invasion with families fleeing for their lives, their very existence.
In 2015 it became a settlement with houses, schools and medical facilities including a hospital.
Established by Harav Moshe Reo Alman chief Rabbai of Ukraine and Kiev.
Many thousands have settled there since and then again on 2022 when the Russians invaded Ukraine again, Anatevka with its location away from Russian attacks opened up and became the operational headquarters of humanitarian efforts.
Thousands of displaced have stopped there, been fed their, had medical treatment before moving on to safety.
Why an event well because through Steve’s direction and story telling, the staging the music, the cast carried with them that this may be a story but the truth of the matter is, it exists still to this day.
The show framed how theatre and live performance can bring a human story to life and carry a flame of hope!
There is a line that says “our forefathers have been ordered out of many many places at a moments notice”
To which Tevya says “Maybe that’s why we always wear our hats”

Every seat was sold for every performance before the end of the run.

To being such a show to life on the stage at this moment in time with such conflict is the world is not an easy decision. However the audience voted with their feet and felt the story we were telling was so on point and needed telling!

Our event has been going for 3 years, we started as a family fun day to showcase the sports clubs at Wigginton after the Covid lockdowns. We also wanted to showcase local musicians and local businesses in our first year we had 1000 attendees and 2000 attendees in our second year. This year we had over 2500 people come to our event. The event is loved by the local community and is well supported by local businesses.

Ignite Concerts may be new, but in just one year, we’ve been able to bring something a little different to York’s music and entertainment scene. We focus on the experience and the atmosphere as well as top class music at our shows. Whether its an intimate candlelit show or a bigger concert we want people to leave feeling like they’ve experienced a little Ignite Concerts magic.

We highlight the talents of local musicians, working with the Ebor String Quartet, creating magical evenings that are as much about the atmosphere as the music. Our small team, led by Alistair Griffin and supported by the experience behind the Big Christmas Concert, is passionate about offering something unique and meaningful to the community.

In 2024 York Pride welcomed over 17,500 people to the event at Knaivesmire providing a fun festival for all to enjoy. The event started with the popular and colourful parade from York Minster which saw over 7,500 march to Knaivesmire, including York residents, schools, charities supporters and businesses.
York Pride is truly an event enjoyed by so many, with over 120 stalls, a fairground, main stage with local, national and international acts and much more.
York Pride also prides itself on working with local suppliers, contractors, charities and the community. From Bar suppliers, staging teams, recycling teams to local acts and businesses.

And over the last 2 summers we have been out in the city supporting our local communities. In June of 2023 and 2024 we were sponsors of York PRIDE, with some of our famous characters such as Dick Turpin and Guy Fawkes joining the PRIDE parade through the city and at the Knavesmire.

Meanwhile this June we also hosted our 3rd annual riverside clean in support of the SEALIFE Trust and World Oceans Day; working with volunteers from a number of local business and organisation we collected over 50kg of rubbish from the riverside area around King’s Staith, New Walk, the Millennium Bridge and Queen’s Staith. We will be holding multiple riverside cleans now each year, with the next scheduled for September 18th 2024.

And again in June this year, for the first time we joined the Our City Festival at York Explore Library, with our Walking Tour characters Jester and Smedley taking to the stage to entertain visitors and share our stories alongside members of some of York’s diverse communities.

Last Christmas, working with our charity partner Merlin’s Magic Wand Jester and Smedley also visited the Children’s Ward at York Hospital distributing gifts and bringing some festive cheer and storytelling to some of York’s younger residents, something that we will again be doing in December 2024.

Over the past couple of years, the hotel has become a strong ambassador for the government’s national Release on Temporary Licence scheme (ROTL). As part of the scheme, the property champions the rehabilitation of prisoners and currently supports day-release prisoners by providing employment opportunities at the hotel whilst they are still serving their sentences. Middletons has supported over 20 ladies on the ROTL scheme. Speaking on behalf of Middletons Hotel, GM Adam has also previously given interviews to The Ministry of Justice and BBC News to increase understanding of the scheme’s benefits. As part of our commitment to support those most in need, Middletons has recently engaged in the Staying Close scheme which is a campaign to support care and foster leaves that is being trialled in York. This work supports by offering mentoring, work experience, mock interviews and paid employment.
As part of recent refurbishment works, the hotel donated 185 pieces of furniture to St Leonard’s Hospice to extend the life of the furniture while also helping those in need, the furniture was sold in their charity shops in the city.
A long-standing plan of Middletons Hotel is to continue to build its relationships with local businesses and the York community. I would like to put forward Hannah and Drew, from York Dance Space. They give so much to the York dance community. Hannah and Drew run the most inclusive dance school, within York.

Their classes start from toddlers, right up to 55+ classes.

They also work within schools, giving dance classes to children who have never had the opportunity to dance. Due to the cost, accessibility and also to show the boys that it’s ok to dance.

They now have their own dance festival, at York Theatre Royal. The Everybody dance festival, this is to celebrate all things dance in York.

Drew has gone above and beyond, helping me. School has always been very hard for me, due to my ADHD and learning disabilities but Drew has put me under his wing. Brough me out of my shell, helped me with his confidence and allowing me to do work experience, at York Dance Space.

The company is Yorkshire and proud of it, testing everything that goes into the hampers to maintain the highest of quality and bringing the hidden gems of Yorkshire to the attention of everyone.

On top of this, the business have been charity partners of OSCAR’s Paediatric Brain Tumour Charity for two-and-a-half years and were instrumental in setting up the charity’s flagship support service: Booster Boxes. These are bespoke gift boxes put together for children with brain tumours and their siblings to bring a smile to difficult days. To get this amount of support from such a small business is phenomenal.

The Milner York (officially rebranding from Principal York in mid-October) has been extending a warm Yorkshire welcome to guests for over 145 years. As an historic Grade II listed building with its cast iron sweeping staircase and original Victorian floors, the hotel is an iconic feature of the city standing proudly and centrally in York rail station. The hotel’s new name draws deeply from York’s railway history after a local hero, William Milner, who was the York Station foreman during World War II. He entered a blazing station building, losing his own life while attempting to obtain a box of medical supplies to treat air raid casualties. This new name symbolises bravery, valour, and a sense of belonging, while also paying tribute to those who have contributed to York’s rich history.

Prior to being acquired by Daniel Thwaites in 2017, Middletons Hotel was run by the Clarke family for over 40 years, whose legacy is still visible to this day. The family bought a collection of different buildings, starting a journey to celebrate their history and bring them together harmoniously, creating the hotel that stands today. Like its unique and historic setting, the hotel has a varied target market; from couples looking for a romantic weekend away and families wanting to enjoy quality time together, to corporate delegates working in the city.
Over the years, Middletons Hotel has had significant investment including a refurbishment of its Cromwell building and Cottage rooms in 2019, followed by another six-figure renovation in 2022 which included upgrades to The Sawmill restaurant, bar area and conservatory. In 2023, the refurbishment of the Lady Anne building was the hotel’s major project as the hotel continued to focus on upgrading its bedroom offering, while conserving the history of the property. Most recently, The Organ Factory has undergone a new transformation, and the once disused pool has now been filled in to create a base for the new, on-site York Gin Distillery. To date, Daniel Thwaites’ total investment into Middletons Hotel exceeds £3.25 million.

Working alongside Visit York, the hotel has spearheaded several campaigns to drive the local tourism economy and put on events for local residents – particularly the newly created, Snooks Trail 2024 and the York Ice Trail 2024. This year’s event saw Middletons Hotel, City Cruises and The Potions Cauldron host three ice sculptures across the hotel’s grounds. The hotel saw an opportunity to work with local companies to showcase their businesses. Middletons Hotel also hosted the press launch event to put York on the map – with a number of high-profile journalists in attendance.Middletons Hotel actively embodies Daniel Thwaites’ ethos of ‘small details, big difference’ and has introduced a number of thoughtful initiatives across the hotel which puts customers at the heart of everything it does. This includes its ‘VI Little P’ package which is designed for the hotel’s younger guests. Upon check-in, all little guests receive a mini fluffy robe, an in-room activity pack, a child-friendly menu and fresh milk and cookies before bed. Taking care of the adults, guests will find White Company toiletries in the bathroom as well as an overnight sleep bag which contains complimentary ear plugs, pillow mist and eye masks. To ensure the best night’s sleep, overnight guests can also choose from the hotel’s pillow menu.

Since we first opened the doors of our tiny hotel in York, we knew we were here not just to generate profit, but to give back to the community—showing how hospitality can blend with the history and values of our ancient town.
We welcomed our first guests under the Supermoon of June 14th, 2022, after challenging times and economic uncertainty for us all.
We are simply a small, enchanted part of a magical city, an added point of intrigue on York’s map—a place filled with wonder, no matter the time of year.
Our annual Hocus Pocus Witches Coven event has now become part of our tradition, and with each year, we welcome more modern witchcraft enthusiasts to join us.
We transformed an abandoned Grade II-listed building, once in serious disrepair, into a magical themed accommodation. We uncovered long-buried features like fireplaces, Tudor walls, original beams, an antique cellar with meat hooks, and original Chinese Fretwork, restoring the essence of the building’s history.
Through historical research, we uncovered the stories of those who once lived here—many of which have been eerily confirmed by our guests and their ghostly experiences during their stay.
Just in time for Halloween, we are launching The Hocus Pocus series on Instagram, filled with clues for those brave enough to participate. There is a prize waiting for the lucky winners!
We are redefining what it means to stay in a “hotel,” and the growing number of bookings and high demand prove that our unique formula is working. Our magic gives us the courage to continue this path.

Tell us about The Joseph Rowntree Theatre…
The Joseph Rowntree Theatre is a registered charity serving the people of York and North Yorkshire. A Grade II listed theatre, it was built by the Rowntree Village Trust in 1935. It is the only remaining Rowntree building still used for its original purpose – a place for recreation and entertainment.

Today, a volunteer board of 15 trustees manages the theatre, supported by over 170 volunteers working across all areas, from stage crew to box office, fundraising and marketing.

It is a proscenium theatre, with 365 seats and full stage facilities, including the ability to fly scenery.
