Chrissy Teigen Just Got Real About Her Stretch Marks on Snapchat
Being a new mom isn’t easy. Beyond actually having to care for a human baby, mothers have to deal with maternity leave or returning to work, as well as taking care of their own bodies after the intensity of the previous nine months. Chrissy Teigen certainly knows that.
The model, who gave birth to her first daughter on April 14, has been refreshingly candid—one of the things we’ve always adored about her—about the pressures and struggles facing new mothers. She’s discussed everything from mom-shaming Internet trolls to the realities of—gasp!—the totally normal thing that happens to nearly 70 percent of women (and 90 percent of mothers): stretch marks.
Last year on Instagram, when she was pregnant, Teigen shared a snap of the lines on her skin, along with the charming caption, “Stretchies.” Then last night, she shared another shot on Snapchat, captioning it, “lol my thighs have tributaries.”
Seriously, love this woman.
Teigen is among the crucial corner of celebrity culture in which actors, models, and other illustrious public figures share their so-called “flaws” to be transparent and honest about body image.
“I come from a stretch mark-prone family—I have them all over my butt and inner thighs,” Teigen told Allure in March. “Luckily, I’m with a man who could not care less about them or else I would be insecure, but during my pregnancy, it was my belly I was scared of. I knew I’d have to do something about it before I started seeing them.”
In that same interview, she also shared she was using a $340 face cream (La Mer’s The Concentrate) to remedy the scars. While it’s not exactly what we—or the derms we consulted—would recommend, we say, hey, to each her own. If something works for you and makes you feel good, there’s no shame in investing in self-care.
Whether they’re called “stretchies,” tributaries, or plain old scars, the more important thing is that we all realize stretch marks aren’t something you should feel as if you need to hide. Thanks the reminder, Chrissy, and know that you’re in good company!
