Katy Perry Says Long Hair Doesn’t Make Women Sexier—and Admits She Loves Her Pixie
When Katy Perry debuted her pixie cut in May, it was—as far as celebrity hair changes go—pretty monumental. As Perry explained on Ellen, going platinum earlier in the year had left her hair falling out by the handful, so a chop was the only logical option. Ever since, she’s been right up there with Cara Delevingne and Kate Hudson, doing the look proud. And today Perry just revealed that life without long hair has completely shifted her perspective in an inspiring way.
While doing press for her new perfume, INDI, Perry told Byrdiethat facing the world without her long length has meant “trying to redefine what beauty means to me.” Cutting off her hair was the biggest experiment she’s ever done—and that’s saying something, given her 96-hour-long live stream—but she says the move has provided her her eye-opening results. “Now I can’t hide behind it. I wanted to know that I could still feel beautiful and love myself without it. It’s fun, it’s freeing, it’s liberating, and I don’t think that ‘sexiness’ and ‘femininity’ is just one thing—long hair. I suppose the goal is to redefine what femininity means to me.”

She also says letting go of that has been a journey, but one that’s left her with a love for throwing a curveball into “traditional” beauty—and dismissing the male expectations that she says has influenced her work in the past. Also a positive, she says: “With the new hair, I get an extra hour back for myself everyday.”
