7 Secrets About Disney World and Disney Land That You Didn’t Know!
Confession time. You guys already know my love of the Mickey Mouse Club (see my post on The Party) and so it shouldn’t come as a shock that I have a love for the theme park itself too. I grew up in Florida so family vacations to Disney World were as common as a trip to the mall. And as an adult, it’s still a place I love to visit for the nostalgia and that instant bolt of happiness you feel once you step inside the gates.
My husband and I are heading down to Disney World next week (I’ll miss you guys!) for an “adult” experience (no kids here) at the parks and resorts. While researching where to go and what to see, we realized that there is so much more to Disney than the rides. Both Disney World and Disney Land have so many secrets! And I don’t just mean “how to beat the crowd” type secrets. No, I’m talking about cool things hidden throughout the park, behind the scenes tricks and legendary tales that make things all the more magical.
So, as I get ready for my trip and because it’s Friday AND because who doesn’t love Disney—here are seven super fascinating secrets you probably didn’t about Walt Disney World and Disney Land!
1. Human Remains Are in the Haunted Mansion in Disney Land
There’s 999,999 ghosts residing in the spooky mansion, plus the ashes of a seven-year-old boy. No joke. Years ago, a group asked for more time on the ride to honor this boy. What the ride operators didn’t know was they were going to spread the ashes over the side of their car. Yes, the ride was shut down to try and clear the ashes away but that’s like trying to clean up the sand at the beach!
2. Hidden Mickeys All Over Disney World and Land
Throughout all the parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, etc) keep your eyes peeled for “Hidden Mickeys.” From the obvious to not so obvious, Imagineers built in the silhouette of Mickey Mouse—in a variety of styles from the traditional tri-circle head with ears to full figured—that isn’t immediately noticeable into every attraction. Once you know to look for them, it’ll take over your trip trying to spot them!
3. Walt Disney Has an Apartment in Disney Land
When Disney Land was built in the ’50s, Walt wanted to soak in the magic 24/7 so he built himself an apartment on Main Street USA, right above the fire station. To this day, a light is left on in the window in memory of Walt and apparently that room has remained untouched since he died.
4. The Magic Kingdom in Disney World Is Actually on the SECOND Floor!
How can that be, you say? Isn’t it outside? Okay, here’s the deal. The first floor—called the Utilidors—is actually BELOW ground. That’s where “Cast Members” report for work, deliveries are made, trash is taken out and more. There’s a whole other world going on below you while you’re waiting in line for Space Mountain!
5. The Most Exclusive Club in the World Is Hidden in Disney Land
When I first heard about Club 33, it blew my mind for many reasons in addition to the fact that it exists at all! Okay, here’s the scoop! Walt himself built this super secret club behind a random green door in New Orleans Square. He wanted a place for VIPs and celebrities to have a place to gather. If you want to go, and hob nob with the likes of say Johnny Depp, you still can. You just have to put your name on a TEN YEAR waiting list and pay $10,000 in initiation fees. After that, it’s a bargain at $3500 a year! But seriously, how cool is that?
6. You Can Sleep in Cinderella’s Castle in the Magic Kingdom…
If you’re name is Suri and your dad is Tom Cruise. Otherwise the suite for six, which was also originally meant as an apartment for Walt and his family, is reserved for charities and events!
7. Cast Members Come To Life in Disney World and Land
OK, so while you can get the guys in the Mickey Mouse suit to shake your hand and pose for a picture, there’s not much else they can do to stay in character because you know, they can’t talk very clearly through the suit. But, rumor has it that if you go up to a human character—we’re talking Belle, Cinderella, Snow White and the like—and ask them a question about the princess they’re emulating, they have to answer in character! So you can mosey on up to Ariel and ask her if she’s got “gadgets and gizmos a plenty” and she must respond as only the Little Mermaid can.
Are you a Disney World/Land goer? Any secrets you have to share? Any of these you’re going to try?
