George Clooney Opened Up About His Relationship With Amal, and It’s Beyond Adorable
George Clooney, the man who so many believed would never get married and never have children, just opened up to gush about both Amal Clooney and the twins they have together. The actor recently made an appearance on David Letterman’s Netflix show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, to talk about his childhood in Kentucky, his activism, and his wife of three-plus years, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.
Letterman asked Clooney to explain the very lucky way he and his wife met while he was at his home on Lake Como in Italy. “It’s the wildest thing. A mutual friend of ours said, ‘I’m stopping by and can I bring my friend?’ And I was like, ‘Of course,'” Clooney said. “And I got a call from my agent, who called me and said, ‘I met this woman who’s coming to your house who you’re going to marry.'”
Conveniently, Clooney’s parents were visiting, so they met Amal at the same time as Clooney.
They stayed up all night talking before exchanging email addresses. After that, Clooney would write to Amal from the perspective of his dog Einstein, asking for her law expertise by saying things like, “I’m being held hostage, and I need a lawyer to get me out of this room.” (Corny, but very cute.)
In an attempt to impress her, Clooney invited Amal to Abbey Road, where he was recording a soundtrack for a movie. “[It’s] a cool thing, you’ve got a 150-piece orchestra and I thought, ‘If you’re ever going to impress somebody….’” But she was in a meeting with a group that allegedly has ties to terrorism. “So she left this meeting…and we’re here just doing a dumb movie score.”
Clooney went on to talk about his wife’s major accomplishments as a lawyer, mentioning that she’s one of the first to be able to bring ISIS to court.
“She is this remarkable human being and now mother, which is something I suppose you should assume she would be wonderful at as well,” he said. “When you see it in person, it makes you feel incredibly proud and also incredibly small.”
Letterman asked about Clooney’s experience as a new father to twins Ella and Alexander, saying, “The purpose of your life is now not you.”
“I have to say that before I had the twins, I felt that way about her,” Clooney explained, referring to Amal. “I felt that I had met someone who I would absolutely trade my life for. I’d met someone that her life meant more to me than my life. And I’d never had that experience before.”
