Sometimes I’m Too Scared to Sleep After Watching Pretty Little Liars. Which TV Shows or Movies Never Fail to Freak YOU Out?
I think with all the lip gloss, perfectly blown out hair and fashion forward dares on Pretty Little Liars that sometimes it’s easy to forget that this is a show about the unsolved murder of a teenager and four alive teens being stalked, harassed and wanted dead by an anonymous bully named “A.” Think I Know What You Did Last Summer meets Gossip Girl–what goes down in some episodes is just downright terrifying. Last night’s episode, titled “What Lies Beneath,” is a perfect example.
I made the mistake of watching alone, in the dark and right before I went to bed. By the end of the episode, my legs were jelly and every noise made me jump out of my skin. I screamed so loud after hearing my cats rustling around in the kitchen that they went scurrying under the bed for an hour.
In case you missed it, here are the three things that went down and made my heart pound.
Hanna finds a letter from Maya. It was written to Emily on the day that she died. She wanted to show Emily something but the location of where she wanted Emily to meet her was smeared away. Letters from the dead–even if they were written while alive–messes with my head every time.
Emily and Hanna discover a picture of Maya at Noel Kahn’s cabin! They sneak in and discover a big bag of Maya’s things, including proof that she never left Rosewood when she ran away. Suddenly all the windows slam shut, the doors lock and they are TRAPPED inside! You can see the shadow of someone (A?) outside. Finally they escape, but not before Hanna stabs herself in the thigh in the process. Once outside there’s a message written on the wall–“I’m saving you for later -A.”
Cue my cold sweats and screams . . .
Spencer gets an email from Noel with a surveillance video of the Kahn cabin during the night and time Maya was killed. At first it’s just nothing. Then you see eerie footage of Maya sneaking around the premises, Jenna and Noel heading inside the cabin together and then, wait for it, Maya getting yanked away by someone we can’t see! Moral of the story? None of the suspects–Noel, Jenna and of course Garrett–killed Maya based on this tape. So a killer is still at a large?! Who is it!?
The half hearted sleep I did manage to get last night was filled with images of a mysterious, masked man grabbing Maya and in some dreams–grabbing me! I spent the morning watching clips of Glee, listening to the new Taylor Swift song and reading the latest Sweet Valley High e-book to cleanse my palate.
For the record, I love American Horror Story even though it has the same effect on me. But, I absolutely will not watch that show alone. And movies like Poltergeist and The Exorcist are some of my favorites but I know I’m going to be paranoid for a few hours (sometimes days) after watching–but I just can’t help myself!
And so I pose the question to you–what movies and TV shows scare the bejeezus out of you but you still risk it and watch each and every time?
Oh, and any thoughts or theories on last night’s PLL? I think Paige is a character we need to fear–mark my words!
