The Best and Worst Moments of the 2016 VMAs
Considering we were promised an award show where Rihanna was opening the night and Kanye West was getting four minutes to do whatever the hell he wanted, I knew we were in for an entertaining evening. And, oh boy, did the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards deliver. There’s so much to talk about, so let’s just get right to it. Here are the best and worst moments of this year’s VMAs…
Best Moment: We got off to a good start with RiRi’s pink dream of an opening performance, and her two following performances only upped the ante (or should I say Anti?). If this entire show was just Rihanna and her backup dancers grooving to “Don’t Stop the Music” for four hours, I’d be OK with it.
Worst Moment: A surprising amount of people on Twitter didn’t know that the Shamester and Lizard Sheeple were really Key and Peele (a.k.a. they clearly weren’t in on the joke). Not cool. DIDN’T YOU SEE KEANU?!?
Best Moment: Alicia Keys’ poem to honor Martin Luther King Jr., who gave his “I Have a Dream” speech 53 years ago today, was one of the most touching and important moments of the show. Watch her tribute, below:
Worst Moment? Or Best Moment? Kanye’s speech was…something, that’s for sure. As for a best or worst moment? Apparently, it depends on what you think of Yeezy because Twitter was a house divided.
THE Best Moment: I’m not entirely sure why they didn’t end the show with Beyoncé’s performance because there is no topping that. She was (literally) . My brain is still melting from it all (including her butt, oh my God).
Worst Moment: Gah, I’m so sorry Britney Spears—because I really do love you—but it was really rude of MTV to make you perform after Beyoncé.
Best Moment: Rihanna’s acceptance speech was definitely a big highlight. When Drake came out to give her the Video Vanguard award, I jumped off my couch yelling “IT’S LOVEEEEEE!!!” and “Power couple!” so loud that I’m sure the downstairs neighbors are not happy with me right now. Worth it. And I’ve never shipped two pop stars harder then when Drake said, “She’s someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old.” Stahp.
