The Painfully Obvious Connection Between ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘Pretty Little Liars’ You Probably Missed
Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl have many similarities. They’re both about beautiful young people who lie a lot and are plagued by anonymous, tech-savvy monsters. (Yes, Dan Humphrey is a monster. You know I’m right.) Each program is chock-full of eye rolls, pettiness, and snappy one-liners—not to mention various shirtless boys sprawled about for good measure. Simply put, Pretty Little Liars is about a bunch of girls who gossip, and Gossip Girl is about a group of pretty little liars. (You see what I did there? Do I get a medal?)
But even with their parallels, the shows exist in two different, well-defined universes. They’re both lying, yes, but in totally separate spaces—physically and metaphorically. (Suburban Pennsylvania and New York City’s Upper East Side are like night and day, to be honest.) That’s why you can watch each show without crossing their wires. Granted, you may be confused about what’s happening in PLL and GG separately, but you’ll never conjoin the plots.
Well, except for this one time. PLL and GG have their own train tracks, but they did quite literally overlap at one specific point—and it’s iconic.
When was it, you ask? Before Pretty Little Liars was even on the air. During the 10th episode of *Gossip Girl’*s first season (“Hi, Society”), the gang dances to a certain song at their Cotillion: “Secret” by The Pierces. Is this ringing any bells? Listen to the song, below, and GG and *PLL’*s overlap will become painfully obvious.
Yes, that is the theme song to PLL that you’re listening to. GG foreshadowed Freeform’s legendary show by previewing its theme song in an episode from December 2007. (PLL premiered in June 2010.) Spooky, right?
GG is off the air, but here’s hoping Blair Waldorf somehow makes an appearance in *PLL’*s final season and reveals that she’s “Uber A.” We’re desperate for another overlap!
