Watch Donald Glover’s Final Community Scene
Several weeks ago, well after it had been announced that he was leaving Community, Donald Glover wondered on Instagram whether the show’s creator, Dan Harmon, hates him. After watching last night’s send-off for Troy, I think Donald can rest easy. The show gave his character a goodbye that was sweet but not maudlin—no montages here. I sort of felt like they couldn’t lose after setting it up last week—I was a big fan of Pierce leaving Troy his boat, the Childish Tycoon (yup, that’s a wink to Donald’s rap ego, Childish Gambino). They did share a side of the study table for years; it checks out. This week, after an episode-long game of lava, it was time for the gang to face facts and say goodbye. Watch Troy’s final farewells by clicking to the 17:50 mark in the vid below.
Sigh. You know, Community has long had this melancholy quality to it—I always thought it was just because of the various comings and goings behind the scenes (Harmon, Chevy Chase, and now Donald). But watching one of the Greendale faithful be sent off into the world (or at least into traffic with LeVar Burton), I realized: There’s something bittersweet about how long this crowd has been hanging around at community college. We’ve never seen them function in real life. And while that’s the beauty of the show’s formula, I think it’s what also makes Community feel like it could end at any time—sooner or later, these guys are gonna have to return to regularly scheduled adulthood, following in Troy’s footsteps.
Well, sort of. I mean, a yearlong Jules Verne boat trip isn’t really regularly scheduled adulthood, and by the way—did anybody else think it was weird they put the “year” time frame on it? That time could easily pass while the show’s still on, thus implying that Troy finished his trip and, you know, just isn’t texting them back anymore. Something tells me we’ll soon get a telegram saying he fell in love and got married in Tahiti—or one saying he died at sea. If it’s the latter, I revise my original opinion: Dan Harmon is totally pissed at Donald Glover.
What did you think of Troy’s send-off?
