World Champion Surfer Stephanie Gilmore Shares Her Sporty and Fashionable Style Tips With Us!
Last night, I had an amazing time sitting down to dinner at SoHo hot spot La Esquina with a trio of pro surfers—who also happen to be Roxy spokesmodels—Stephanie Gilmore, Kelia Moniz, and Monyca Byrne-Wickey. The three were in town to show off their wave-riding skills at the Roxy Classic surf competition in Montauk over the weekend and finished off the quick trip at Stephanie’s favorite NYC eatery.
From left: Kelia Moniz, Stephanie Gilmore, and Monyca Byrne-WickeyChatting with the girls was as fun as it was inspirational. Stephanie, Kelia, and Monyca are badass, but then total beachy babes too. (Monyca won’t take out her stud earrings even when competing—awesome.) Born and raised in Australia, Stephanie holds five world champion titles and has the distinction of being the only female surfer in history to win one as a rookie. While she’s busy traveling the world on a daily basis and hitting the waves as much as she can, the Aussie still squeezes in her fashion interests too. She loves Isabel Marant’s rocker-boho-cool as much as we do and is a frequent shopper at the L.A. outpost of The Reformation (wonder if she has the same romper as Karlie Kloss…).
In between noshing delicious tacos and sipping passion-fruit margaritas, Stephanie and I had a quick chat about styling tips. I figured, someone that accomplished has some tricks that we can definitely learn from.
GLAMOUR: What are your tricks to being sporty and fashionable?
Stephanie Gilmore: First and foremost: comfort, of course. I think that currently sporty is very in fashion. One of my style icons is Rihanna who always seems to pull off this punk [look]. She’s wearing a baseball cap and looking really relaxed, but at the same time she’s covered in jewels, and I love that crossover between sport and glamour.
My tips are to keep your eyes on the girls like the Williams sisters and Maria Sharapova. I love what they do. I love that they come out onto the court in dresses that they designed and dresses that work and function well, but they look amazing.
I think basically for myself, for surfing, I just make sure I have a bikini that I can wear everywhere—which is usually just a black bikini. I can throw a dress on top and I can wear it out afterward, when I’m going down the street hanging out. And just have fun with it. Don’t be afraid to be glamorous.
We have about three weeks left of summer. What summer essentials are you going to wear the death out of for rest of the season?
SG: A really good beach bag is a must. Just something you can throw everything into. Roxy has a really good one right now. It’s a plastic mesh kind of feel, so when you take it to the beach, the sand just falls straight through it. It’s great you don’t come home with half the beach in your bag, which is awesome. I love the Turkish beach towels. I love those because they’re really cute to have around your house—you can throw them over the couch—or you can take them to the beach.
And a good string triangle bikini. I will wear that thing to the death. Wear it under a singlet, wear it surfing, wear it to sunbake. I live in my block colors too; you can mix and match.
