Yara Shahidi Just Committed to Harvard University
It’s official, my friends: Yara Shahidi is going to Harvard University.
The Black-ish actress confirmed the news on social media Tuesday night (June 6), posting a photo of herself wearing a Harvard sweatshirt to both Twitter and Instagram.
On Instagram, Shahidi accompanied her Harvard swag photo with an inspiring James Baldwin quote: “The paradox of education is precisely this—that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated,” she wrote. She kept things simple on Twitter, captioning her pic with a simple Harvard hashtag: #CrimsonPride.

This is a monumental decision for any student, but it must’ve weighed particularly heavy on Shahidi because she got into literally every school she applied to. And if one of those schools was Harvard, you can bet she had a few other Ivy Leagues knocking on her door too.
So it raises the question: How did Shahidi make her choice? Visit each school and interrogate the faculty like a CIA agent? Make an extremely lengthy pro-con list? Put all the letters in a jar and randomly pull one out? (LOL, she most definitely didn’t do that, but it’s certainly fun to imagine.)
Shahidi isn’t the only famous face headed to Harvard: Malia Obama is slated to begin classes at the university this coming fall after deferring for a year. Last fall, Shahidi told People she also wants to defer for a year, but no word yet on if that’s still her plan.
“I think no matter what, I know that I want to go to college. I know that I’m going to defer a year and I’m willing to have a more unorthodox college experience, but at a certain point I want to be on a campus,” she said.
