Need Something To Smooth Lumps and Bumps (Or Support Your Boobs!) Under Your Wedding Dress? Here Are 9 Wedding Undergarments To Consider!
Save the Date reader Kat is in desperate need of some wedding day shapewear, so I thought I’d do a roundup of all sorts of wedding undergarments!
My wedding day is just a month away! I need to find some good (and preferably pretty!) shapewear to wear under my wedding dress. My dress is a strapless A-line, and I definitely need some support for “the girls.” (I’m on the busty side!) I’d love any suggestions!
Here are my thoughts:
The undergarment I wore under my wedding dress was so painfully ugly, it’s not even manufactured any more! It was sort of like this, but less sexy (Can you imagine?!) and with coverage to the mid-thigh.
Flexees Easy-Up Strapless Body Briefer, $41.30
*I actually think the item above would be a viable option for you. It’ll smooth your middle and support your boobs—plus, the crotch can be opened and closed, so you won’t have to take the whole thing off to pee.*It didn’t work out so well for me because the whole garment is sized by your boobs, so I bought the 34B (I’m actually more of a 32C) which didn’t offer a whole lot of suck-in-age, which I would have liked.
I’ve since discovered the Vedette family of shapewear, which offers sufficient compression for smaller sizes. (I totally get that not everyone wants compression, but I prefer the squeezed-in feeling to having my lumps and bumps showing!) This stuff seriously cinches, so you’re going to want to do a few “test wears” before your wedding. And follow their sizing guidelines—if you buy a smaller size for extra compression, you won’t be able to breathe! (Vedette’s prettier corsets remind me of something Dita Von Teese might wear, if her undergarments weren’t custom stitched from cast-off bits of Marilyn Manson’s soul.)
I think this would be good under a strapless dress:
Vedette Valerie, $49.60
This one is pretty but the color might show through and it costs almost twice as much:
Vedette Floriana, $88
I wouldn’t bother with something with a “shorts” bottom, since you don’t need butt slimming under an A-line dress. But brides who are wearing more a fitted dress could try something like this, which will suck in the butt and thighs, too.
Vedette Ariane, $51.75
(Yes, I KNOW it’s ugly as sin!)
This bustier, from BHLDN, is a slightly prettier option for under an A-line dress:
Sleekly Bustier from BHLDN, $110
You mentioned you’re busty, so I definitely wouldn’t go for a regular strapless bra, which won’t offer much support, but girls who are a B cup or less might want to consider this bra, which is my favorite strapless. (I’m wearing it right now!) There are prettier convertible bras, but I’m suggesting this one based on experience!
Audrey Convertible Bra from American Eagle, $20.70
If you’d rather not have your stomach compressed all night, this strapless corset will offer a little more support than a regular strapless bra. (Just make sure it doesn’t show through your dress!)
Aerie Concert Bra Corset, $20.70
Girls with small cups and a bare-back dress should check out the Nu Bra, which I’m also a fan of. (Beth recommended it to me. She’s chestier than I am, and she’s a huge fan!)
Fashion Forms Nu Bra from Macy’s, $65
I know, I know! A self-adhesive bra sounds like maybe the worst idea EVER. But I swear by mine. It keeps the ladies in place while it smoothes and lifts. And it stays put all night. (I wore mine dancing!)
There’s always the option to have cups sewn into your wedding dress, but those weren’t quite enough for me.
And finally, if you just want something to smooth things over without smothering you, can’t go wrong with classic Spanx.
Spanx Skinny Britches High-Waisted Short from Zappos, $46
My problem with Spanx is that I’m very small-framed, and since they’re not super-tight on me, I feel like they add bulk. (SO not what I’m going for!) The smallest size Spanx offers is Small, which correlates to a 2-4 dress size. I’m usually a 0, so they’re just not tight enough!
I know not everyone enjoys an undergarment as much as I do—and some people don’t want (or need) extra suck-in-age. But like 4-inch heels and fake eyelashes (both of which, like shapewear, also made me feel more “pulled together” my wedding day) if you like shapewear and wear it regularly, it’s definitely something to consider for your wedding day.
